Livestream to X (Twitter) Media Studio via RTMP

Twitter has officially discontinued its Periscope apps as of March 31, 2021. However, you can continue to livestream to Twitter using Media Studio. Twitter requires to be a Twitter Blue subscriber to utilize Twitter Media Studio and thus stream to Twitter via RTMP (as opposed to via the API). Reach out to your Twitter account manager if you do not have access.


This article provides the instructions to:


Step 1 - Getting the RTMP Details from Twitter Media Studio

  1. Log in to Twitter Media Studio.
  2. Click on the Sources tab.
  3. Click on Create source.
  4. Enter the Source Name (e.g., Socialive).
  5. Select RTMP as the Source Type.
  6. Select US East (N. Virginia) as the Region.
  7. Click Create.
  8. Next, you will see your detailed RTMP information. Copy both the RTMP URL and RTMP Stream Key.

Step 2 - Adding the RTMP Account in Socialive

In Socialive Studio, follow the steps to add the RMTP connection. Once the Twitter RTMP connection is set up and you can start a livestream to Twitter Media Studio. Follow the steps in the next sections to:

Creating a Livestream to Start Immediately

  1. In Socialive:
    1. Create a new session or open an existing one.
    2. On the right-side panel, toggle on the Twitter RTMP entry (created in step 2).
    3. Start your session. Be sure to use a Start Card or Video since the next steps may take a minute or two.
  2. Log in to Twitter Media Studio.
  3. Click on the Broadcasts Tab.
  4. Click on Create Broadcast.
  5. Enter the Broadcast name.
  6. Select the Category your broadcast belongs to.
  7. Select the Source (e.g., Socialive).
  8. Select the Audience - either Public or Private.
  9. Select to Start Immediately your broadcast.
  10. Open Advanced Settings to enable the chat functionality or stream encryption.
  11. Open Content Restrictions to disable broadcast replay or apply Geo-restrictions.
  12. View the player at the top of the window to see a live preview of the video being sent to your source.
  13. Click Create Broadcast to save your broadcast settings.
  14. Under the preview screen at the top, click the Tweet button.
  15. Create a tweet for your broadcast. Click Tweet to send your broadcast live on Twitter.

Creating a Livestream to Start Later

  1. Log in to Twitter Media Studio, and click on the Broadcasts Tab.
  2. Click on Create broadcast.
  3. Enter the Broadcast name.
  4. Select the Category your broadcast belongs to.
  5. Select the Source (e.g., Socialive).
  6. Select the Audience - either Public or Private.
  7. Select to Start later, pick a Start Date and Time, and the End Date and Time.
  8. Under Recurring, select if the broadcast repeats daily or weekly or does not repeat.
  9. Select a Poster Image to upload from your local computer. The suggested format is 16:9 Aspect Ratio, 1280x720 Resolution.
  10. Open Advanced Settings to enable the chat functionality or stream encryption.
  11. Open Content Restrictions to disable broadcast replay or apply Geo-restrictions.
  12. Click Create Broadcast to schedule your broadcast to start later.
  13. Under the preview screen at the top, click the Tweet button.
  14. Create a tweet for your broadcast and tweet it to make it available for your audience to view your broadcast when it goes live. You can also schedule your tweet to post at a later date (e.g., the day before your broadcast).
